Information technology (IT) has emerged to become indispensable with the improvement and optimization of business processes. Furthermore, IT ceased to have merely a "support role" in organizations and adopted a leading role which allows it to guide organizations on how to gain strategic advantages and explore new market opportunities, leading to higher financial
results. Newly offered IT services such as those associated with Internet technologies and electronic commerce are among the most publicized means of reaching such higher organizational performance by today's modern corporations. E-commerce provides the opportunity to simple users as well as corporations of any size, to redefine their business via automation of their commercial transactions and improve their global presence. This study is part of a major research project undertaken by the University of Piraeus focusing on the exploration and analysis of e — commerce operations and infrastructure in Greece.
The study analyzes Internet-based activities and commercial transactions of Greek corporations and Internet service providers (ISPs). Finally, the study presents a plethora of new data about the current and future needs of Greek organizations in e — commerce infrastructure and telecom services.
